British Columbia Time Zone Change — Outlook Calendar Time Zone Settings

Body

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, clocks in Vancouver and B.C.’s Pacific time region will remain at UTC−07:00 instead of moving back one hour. Older Pacific time zone settings can cause calendar items to appear one hour early or late.

Before November 1, check your device and Outlook time zones, then review the future meetings you organize.

Who is affected

  • CapU faculty and staff using Outlook or Teams calendars on university-managed or personal devices.
  • Meeting organizers, especially those with recurring or multi-year series and meetings on or after November 1.

What CapU is doing

CapU Digital Technology Services (DTS) will deploy updates to university-managed computers before November 1 to configure computer date and time, Windows time zones, and Outlook time zones where applicable. The update may not reach every device or app, so you still need to check your settings.

What you need to do

Step 1 Install updates and restart

On a university-managed computer, review if your device has received new updates. Keep your device online and connected to VPN (where applicable) to ensure you device updated time zone. Restart your device to ensure updates take effect.

On a personal Windows computer, apply the required updates yourself, restart, then check Windows and Outlook using the steps below.

Step 2 Check your time zone settings

Do this before editing meetings. For a B.C. calendar, select (UTC-07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia). Check every Outlook app you use, including Outlook on the web, because its setting can differ from the desktop app.

Windows

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Under Time zone, confirm the B.C. option. Select it if an older Pacific zone remains.
  3. If the setting is locked or the option is missing, contact the IT Service Desk. Leave the clock time unchanged.

Mac and mobile devices

Mac devices

  1. Open System Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. If a message says updated time zone definitions will be installed at the next restart, save your work and restart your Mac.
  3. After restarting, confirm Set time and date automatically is On and the displayed date and local time are correct.

After November 1, the time zone label may change. Check the displayed local time rather than relying on the label.

Outlook for Mac

  1. Open Outlook > Settings.
  2. Under Calendar, open Work Schedule > Time zones.
  3. Confirm Default time zone shows Your device setting, and Default time zone for new events is set to Sync to device.

Microsoft Teams on Mac

  1. Select … (Settings and more) > Settings.
  2. In General, under Language and regional formats, confirm Follow OS settings is On. Restart Teams if you change this setting.
  3. Scroll to Time zone and confirm Current time zone shows America/Vancouver.

Step 3 Review meetings you organize

Review appointments and Teams meetings on or after November 1, especially recurring series. Updating your default calendar time zone does not correct every existing event. Keep the intended local time and location in mind.

Single meetings

  1. Open the meeting you organized and verify its date and intended start and end times.
  2. If a correction is needed, check the event’s time zone. Use the B.C. option for a meeting intended to remain at the same B.C. time.
  3. Recheck the numeric start and end times. Save the appointment or send the meeting update to attendees.

Recurring meetings in new Outlook or the web

Record any moved or cancelled occurrences first, then open the whole series rather than one occurrence.

  1. Open the recurring meeting and choose All events in the series or Edit Series.
  2. Open the date and time section, then select the Time zone globe.
  3. For a B.C. series, confirm both Start Time Zone and End Time Zone use the B.C. option. Keep the intended start and end times.
  4. Select Send to distribute the updated invitation.

If a Reset Time Zones message appears:

In classic Outlook, open the series and use Edit Recurrence to check its time zone, then save or send the update.

Changing a series time zone resets exceptions. Recreate previously moved or cancelled occurrences afterwards, review future dates and confirm attendees received the update.

Step 4 Check again on November 1 and afterwards

Confirm your computer clock and upcoming Outlook and Teams meetings show the intended times. Pay particular attention to meetings with people outside B.C. If a time is wrong, confirm it with the organizer or contact the IT Service Desk.

What to avoid

  • Do not move your device clock or every meeting by one hour to compensate.
  • Do not edit or delete and rebook a meeting someone else organized. Ask the organizer to correct it.

Troubleshooting

What you see

What to do

An older Pacific zone or a locked setting

Check updates and the steps above. Contact the IT Service Desk if you cannot select the B.C. option.

Different settings in desktop and web Outlook

Check both. Confirm each uses the intended time zone.

A meeting one hour early or late

Organizers check the event or series. Attendees contact the organizer; do not change your copy.

Frequently asked questions

Will Teams meetings be affected

New Teams meetings should use the correct zone once the settings are right. Organizers should review existing Teams meetings just as they review Outlook meetings.

What about people outside British Columbia

Time differences can change when other locations adjust their clocks. Name the intended city and time zone in the invitation and confirm attendees’ local start times.
